Jonathan Finds Business Support in his Own Back Yard

When Blackburn resident Jonathan Scadding decided to set up his own new business, he didn’t have to look far for help and advice. His next-door neighbour, Mubarak Chati works for Enterprise4All – a not for profit business support agency – so a chance remark across the garden fence quickly turned into an offer of assistance.

When, earlier this year, Jonathan was made redundant, he still had his part time job as a caretaker at St Gabriel’s Primary School off Pleckgate Road in Blackburn, but this left him with time to devote to a business of his own. He therefore set about planning the launch of a company that would undertake minor property repairs and maintenance work, particularly for more elderly local residents.

Enterprise4All has spent the last two years delivering the NWDA’s Business Start-Up programme in Lancashire and parts of Greater Manchester and continues to support new ventures as a result of a recent extension to the project. Through it, E4All has provided free assistance to nearly a thousand new companies and aspiring entrepreneurs, so Mubarak and his colleagues were in an ideal position to provide Jonathan with the support he needed.

Enterprise4All advisers have now started to work with Jonathan, helping him through the formal elements of the start-up process and developing a business plan aimed at steady and sustainable growth.

“Jonathan’s new business will have a lot going for it,” says Mubarak Chati. “He obviously has a lot of experience and, living locally, he’ll be well placed to help other residents whenever they need a hand. His work at the local primary school also means that he’s already CRB checked, which is an important security consideration for anyone who’s planning to invite a contractor or tradesperson into their home.
