Enterprise4All Approved as Women’s Business Centre

Ilyas Munshi receiving E4All's awardThe Lancashire based business support organisation, Enterprise4All has been named as an Approved Women’s Business Centre under a new standard funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and developed by Prowess – the independent voice of women’s enterprise in the UK.

Enterprise4All’s achievement was formally announced on Friday 29th January during the Northwest Women in Business Awards, which are held annually by the North West Women’s Enterprise Forum. The event took place at Ribby Hall at Wrea Green and the award was received on behalf of E4All by Chief Executive Ilyas Munshi.

Congratulating the company on its achievement, Prowess’ Quality & Standards Officer Jo Makepeace said: “This is the world’s first and only international quality standard for women’s enterprise support – and Enterprise4All is one of the first organisations in the world to achieve it.

"With the backing of the government, and the continued support of the NWDA, the Women’s Business Centre standard has been developed as a framework for providing world-class support services to budding and established women entrepreneurs. Organisations such as Enterprise4All that have achieved the WBC standard put women’s requirements at the forefront of their thinking.

“As an Approved Women’s Business Centre, Enterprise4All has undergone a rigorous assessment against the WBC standard. In achieving Approved WBC status, it has demonstrated that it understands and embeds the needs and aspirations of its women clients into the very fabric of its organisation. It is focused on establishing and maintaining a long-term relationship with female clients, providing support through the whole lifecycle of their business journey.”

As the world’s first international standard for women’s enterprise support, the WBC standard is intended to become the foundation for a global network of Approved WBCs that will bring together women entrepreneurs from many different countries and cultures, enabling them to learn from one another, to share knowledge and to promote their businesses.

Speaking immediately after receiving the award, Enterprise4All’s Chief Executive Officer, Ilyas Munshi said: “We’re all very thrilled to have been approved as one of the first Women’s Business Centres. It’s the result of a real and ongoing commitment to delivering tailored business support to entrepreneurs from under-represented sections of the community. We’re proud and delighted to have gained this recognition; the award is a culmination of a lot of hard work from all our Enterprise4All team over the last few years.

“In March 2009, we received the Prowess ‘Flagship Award’ which is a national quality standard for services to female entrepreneurs, so this latest achievement marks another step forward because it opens international opportunities. We now look forward to building on this, working on both local and international projects that seek to address the many social issues facing women today, and bringing in elements of the enterprise agenda that create new opportunities for employment, wealth creation, education and engagement between different communities.”

Enterprise4All is currently supporting female entrepreneurs across Lancashire through a range of programmes funded by the NWDA. Amongst others, these include the High Growth Programme, the Mentoring programme and the leadership development initiative, LEAD. In the Lancaster district, E4All is supporting aspiring business women through the NWDA’s Intensive Start-Up Support programme, and in Pennine Lancashire, it is helping to support women from minority ethnic communities through a LEGI-funded programme called Micro-business Support in Deprived Communities, which is being provided under the No Limits initiative.

Sir Chris takes Leaders to New Heights

On Thursday 28th January, Britain’s most famous mountaineer, Sir Chris Bonington met with an audience of local business managers at the University Centre in Blackburn to share with them his thoughts and experience of leadership.

The masterclass was organised by the Lancashire based business support organisation, Enterprise4All, as part of LEAD – an intensive ten-month leadership development programme funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA.)

Chris Bonington & LEAD delegates - photo by Wendy Woods of the National Diploma in Photography course at Blackburn CollegeIn all, around 50 local business people participated in the interactive session, in which Sir Chris took them through the planning, history, logistics and decision making processes of his successful bid to reach to the summit of Mount Everest in 1975. As expedition leader, he had to contend with the practical challenges of managing a team of 80 - including climbers, sherpas and support personnel - but he also had to deal with many more human issues such as morale, motivation and conflicts of personality and ambition.

“Sir Chris’s account of the1975 British Everest Expedition was enlightening and inspiring for all of us,” recalls Enterprise4All’s Chief Executive, Ilyas Munshi. “He drew clear parallels between the challenges he faced then and the challenges that business managers face today. His descriptions and his questions to the audience really emphasised the relevance of key leadership issues such as team building, confidence, trust and the ability to be sensitive to people’s feelings.  These are sometimes described as ‘soft skills’ but by showing how crucial these things were in the context of life-and-death decision making, Sir Chris enabled us all to recognise that they should never be overlooked, nor their importance under-estimated.”

The masterclass presentation was well received by the delegates, many of whom have now been working together for several weeks on the LEAD programme, sharing advice and experience and helping one another with their day to day challenges. Other audience members will shortly be taking part in the same programme as part of a second LEAD cohort organised by Enterprise4All, and further cohorts are planned for later in the year.

As part of its work on LEAD, Enterprise4All has arranged presentations by a number of other masterclass speakers including ‘Secret Millionaire’ Kavita Oberoi and motivational speaker Chris Moon who – having survived kidnap, threatened execution and a landmine explosion – ran a marathon less than a year after leaving hospital with new artificial limbs.

Launched in May 2009, the LEAD programme is open to businesses employing up to 20 people and provides various forms of support. It emphasises leadership and strategy and comprises a mixture of interactive workshops, management exchanges and inspirational masterclasses. These and other elements emphasise the importance of being able to step back from the day to day routines and to give thought to how best to grow the business - rather than simply how to run it.

Companies wishing to find out more about Enterprise4All’s work on the programme should call  Business Link North West on 0845 00 66 888 or visit www.businesslinknw.co.uk/lead and select “Enterprise4All” from the list of providers.
